Scenario :: 20-Oct-2009

After yesterdays scenario on drive time we received a call from kweku who is dead against the extended family system. Kweku traces all his current woes to his father’s inability to focus on his family. His father was educated and well to do but was saddled with the burden of caring for his extended family. He recalls that, his father’s hypertension and subsequent stroke increased whenever he got bombarded with issues concerning his extended family hence not giving him and his other siblings the proper care.

Even though majority of submissions from our listeners yesterday proved they were in support of the extended family we want people to tell us about how we can improve our extended family set up to make it more beneficial. Unlike the developed countries – Ghana does not have well structured social support systems.

HI BOLA,

YOUR MOTHER, FATHER, AND SIBLINGS ARE YOUR EXTENDED FAMILY. HOW CAN ANYBODY WITH THEIR RIGHT MIND WITH TELL YOU THAT YOU SHOULDN'T TAKE OF THEM IF YOU CAN. IN GHANA PARENTS INVEST MOST OF THEIR RETIREMENT ON THEIR CHILDREN . GHANA IS NOT LIKE HERE IN THE US WHERE ONE CAN HAVE RETIREMENT PLANS. WHEN MY HUSBAND'S FAMILY NEEDS HELP WE HELP THEM AND WHEN MY FAMILY NEEDS HELP WE HELP THEM.

Bola, this extended family thing is a headache to some of us now because some people take undue advantage of it to do their own thing. Our father used everything that was due us on them and we have to struggle to make it on our own. Thus though it made us stood the test of time and averagely we are doing fine now, we could have been better of if we have had our due opportunities. Good evening.

The challenges of living with an extended family can be frightening to say the slightest, but it can be incredibly rewarding as well. There are numerous types of family living arrangements in existence, and our extended family living arrangement is working for us for the most part.

It is more to do with our ups and downs and by so doing the extended family become a platform for parents to depend on.

extended family is not a good thing,imagine my sister giving birth with some foolish,useless,hopeless and idiotic man,who is not the least responsible in anything at all,and now that sister of mine wants me to care for the children,pay their school fees despite the fact that i do a lot for her.meanwhile i have a huge responsibility by way of caring for my children which is already difficult for me .their school fees alone is a headache since they attend one of the best schools in ghana.TO HELL WITH EXTENDED FAMILY.

without support from the extended family some of us wouldn't be where we are.though there are some challenges we have to look at the positive side of it.
